Best Western Sundance - Activities and Attractions

Outdoor Recreation

The view into the Black Canyon of the Gunnison from our North Rim will leave you breathless. Brace yourself to peer down 2,000 vertical feet of rock into a canyon that ranks among the continent's narrowest.

Float or hike into the sanctum of the Gunnison Gorge, where anglers thrill to trophy trout fishing in an awesome canyon setting.

West of Delta, Dominguez & Escalante Canyons beckon you to explore their grandeur. River-running, hiking, biking, four-wheeling, and the search for traces of ancient cultures continue year-round in our amazing climate.

And, of course, we're the Gateway to the Grand Mesa, an alpine tabletop set upon an island in the sky, where over 300 lakes and ponds make this an anglers paradise. This mountain is one of the last places where a person can find a pond or lake to have all to oneself. Moose have been newly reintroduced to the Mesa so what for these shy creatures. Stay a good distance from them, they are not bashful about charging at someone who lingers too near.

After you've explored our countryside, take a drive at our two year-round golf courses — DeerCreek Village Golf Club in Cedaredge,  and Devil's Thumb Golf Club in Delta , offering a challenge for all levels of golfer set in a panoramic valley.

Cultural Heritage Attractions

Delta County is rich agricultural valleys and bountiful orchards cradled by lake-strewn mountains, vast forests and enticing desert canyons. Here lies the bounty of Colorado complemented by raw splendor and unique attractions.

The North Fork Valley takes it's name from the North Fork of the Gunnison River, which meanders through one of the most enchanting and picturesque valleys in the West. Loaded with natural and organic fruit and produce stands, this valley is being referred to as the "Garden Spot" of Colorado. Stop by the Creamery Arts Center for one of the most unusual community arts centers you will ever experience. Be sure to visit the restrooms! When you get there you will know why.

The Surface Creek Valley is famous for it's apples. Fed by waters from the Surface Creek which flows off of the towering Grand Mesa, this verdant agricultural region produces great fruit and wine. Numerous art galleries feature local, regional and/or international collections.

Wineries? Of course we have wineries. Stop in at Stoney Mesa or Surface Creek Winery and try a taste. You can buy wine to take home. Delta Country has over 47 vineyards and 16 active wineries, 9 with tasting rooms. And new this year a brandy distillery Peak Spirits and a cidery, Blossomwood Cidery.

Wildlife and Wildflowers

Birding is one of the fastest growing activities in Delta County. Enjoy the feathered friends at Confluence Park, Grand Mesa, the Black Canyon, Fruitgrower's Reservoir (Hart's Basin), Crawford State Park, and many others. There is a map at the front desk to guide you.

Bird species in the area include the Blue Heron, Sandhill Crane (migration in March), Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, Sage Sparrows, Peregrine Falcon, Burrowing Owls, Three-toed Woodpeckers, Fox Sparrow, Gray Jay, Western Tanager, numerous songbirds and many others.

This is home to mule deer, elk, black bear, cougar, bobcat and antelope. Several smaller mammals like fox, raccoon and beaver are also easy to spot.

From high alpine tundra plants to desert canyon cactus, you will find a plethora of blooming beauty. These wonderful specimens are not camera shy. You can make a day of it just finding and photographing your favorites.

" Our guests love to wander around the area because we have such a diverse landscape that offers numerous experiences!"
